Tue, 27 Jun 2017 18:04:48 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Press Release: DNA Calls for an Independent Review of the CIP Tue, 27 Jun 2017 18:04:48 +0000 A section of the crowd that attended the launch of the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) on Tuesday. (OBSERVER media photos)

The Leadership of the DNA is calling for an in-depth independent review and accounting of our CIP and an honest discussion with the People of our country from the Gaston Brown-led administration for what it describes as “serious and worrisome developments” concerning the Canadian government’s imposition of visa requirements for our citizens desirous of traveling to Canada.

The new requirement takes effect from June 27th, 2017 at 5:30am.

The DNA remains deeply concerned about the legislative structure and management of the CIP which it believes lacks in depth due diligence procedures, scrutiny and accountability to the extent that the process leading to the issuance of Antigua and Barbuda’s CIP passports has been compromised.

Th release from the Canadian authorities states that, “after carefully monitoring the integrity of Antigua and Barbuda’s travel documents, the Government of Canada has determined that Antigua and Barbuda no longer meets Canada’s criteria for visa exemption.”

Leading personalities within the DNA have consistently stated that the CIP is not sustainable and cannot be depended upon ad infinitum as the government’s principal revenue earner.

DNA Political leader, Hon. Joanne Massiah says, “it is the People of Antigua and Barbuda who will feel the immediate brunt of this blow and who will endure immeasurable hardships and inconvenience resulting from our government’s failure to rethink its policy towards the CIP which it continues to shroud in secrecy.

Regrettably, the government has demonstrated that it has no interest whatsoever in the investment component of the CIP and has, instead, focused exclusively on the straight sale option given its desperation to obtain quick cash from these so-called investors.

This over reliance on the reckless selling of our passports is testament to the government’s abject failure to diversify and grow the economy for the benefit of the vast majority of our People.”

DNA’s Communications Officer, Malaka Parker, opined, “on close examination of the contributions to the National Development Fund (NDF) and a critical analysis of what these funds have been used for, it is glaringly obvious that the government has squandered opportunities to invest the NDF funds into sustainable ventures designed to benefit the People of Antigua and Barbuda. Rather, the NDF funds continue to be used to pay for recurrent expenses and questionable transactions.

How can any serious government continue to call the programme CIP? Point the People of our country to the investmen aspect of the sale of our passports!”

The DNA is encouraging the citizens and residents of our country to take this development very seriously.

Having heard the response of Prime Minister Brown, and the flippancy with which he discussed the development, the government remains determined to maintain the CIP.

Which country will follow next – the United Kingdom and other EU territories? Importantly, when was PM Brown and the government made aware of this new requirement by the Canadian government? Was it over the last few days? If not, why were we only informed by our government today? Was PM Brown unconcerned about the scores of citizens who had purchased tickets or were planning to vacation in Canada over the summer?

The DNA is adamant that neither the UPP nor the ABLP has the moral authority or credibility to offer a viable solution to this development.

What is required is a government in which the People repose their full confidence and one which the regional and international community takes seriously.

The DNA will offer the People real solutions to our country’s social and economic challenges and restore our country’s good name.

The DNA’s commitments to our People are unequivocally expressed in our Party’s 12 Pledges to the nation, specifically Pledge #2 which commits “To put country above Party and self.”

Press Release: LA Clippers Hire Jerry West Sun, 25 Jun 2017 16:21:08 +0000

The L.A. Clippers today announced the hiring of Jerry West, who will serve as a consultant for the team. West brings many accolades to the Clippers, including being named a two-time NBA Executive of the Year (1995, 2004), and is an eight-time NBA Champion (1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988, 2000, 2015, 2017).

“For them to want me to come here and maybe think I can help, I am really flattered,” West said. “I am sold on the ownership here. I think they want to establish their own identity in this town, and that is what to me is most important. Establish their own identity and ability to win at the very highest level.”

“When I took the job as president of this organization, one of the things I said we’re going to do is be world class in everything,” President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach Doc Rivers said. “Our organization has to be world class. We want our team to be the best in service as well. Today is a great step for us.”

“This just another great example of the commitment that Steve Ballmer has allowed the organization, Doc Rivers and me to add someone like Jerry West,” Clippers Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank said. “What Jerry has done is unmatched in NBA history, and he will bring great value. It is just another example of Steve’s investment in our entire infrastructure.”

West, 79, is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, a 14-time NBA All-Star and a Gold Medal Olympian. He is one of three players in NBA history to play at least 14 seasons in the league and be selected as a member of the All-Star team every year. Additionally, he ranks 24th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list (25,192 points) and guided the Lakers to nine trips to the NBA Finals and one NBA Championship (1972) as a player. Overall, he averaged 27.0 points, 6.7 assists and 5.8 rebounds during his 14-year NBA career.

Following his playing career, West spent a successful three-year period as the head coach of the Lakers (1976-79, .589 winning percentage) and a brief three-year tenure as a consultant (1979-82, two NBA titles) with the team before transitioning full-time into the front office, where he spent a total of 18 years with the Lakers as General Manager/Executive VP of Basketball Operations. During his tenure at the helm of Basketball Operations in Los Angeles, the Lakers captured four NBA Championships (1985, 1987, 1988, 2000) and appeared in the playoffs in 17 of 18 seasons. West then transitioned to Memphis from 2002-2007, when he led the Grizzlies, who had previously never made the playoffs, to three consecutive post-season appearances (2004, 2005, 2006) as the team’s President of Basketball Operations. Most recently, West served as an Executive Board member for the Golden State Warriors, where he assisted the team’s ownership group and represented the organization in a wide variety of team-related functions in his role with the club. During his time with the Warriors, West saw the team win two NBA Championships (2015, 2017) and three Western Conference Championships (2015, 2016, 2017).

    ]]> 0 The Publicist Pitch & Press Release System is Broken Sat, 24 Jun 2017 15:44:54 +0000

At any given time, my email inbox has over 9,000 unopened emails.

Some are newsletters I regularly read, while others are unsolicited offers on office supplies and pet medications. But a large portion of my unread inbox contains email pitches sent to me by music publicists, begging for a plug of someone’s new album or asking me to retweet a photo of a celebrity at a new hot spot. In almost every case, a client spent a good portion of their budget to pay a publicist to craft an email for me that I will never read.

I don’t open most email pitches. On any given weekday, I’d say my inbox holds well over $10,000 worth of pitches, 95 percent of which get tossed in the trash without so much as a glance. That’s a lot of wasted money by bands and young companies that could be used in far more productive ways.

Why do I throw most away? It’s not out of spite — I simply don’t have the time to read it all. In the three years since I’ve launched Amplify, my email address has been added to hundreds of PR media advisory lists, traded among ad agencies, bought and resold by large clearing houses and constantly added to press lists that I really have no business being on. Even if I dedicated myself full-time to answering these emails with a simple “no thanks” or “sorry this isn’t germane to Amplify,” there wouldn’t be enough hours in the day to make it through every pitch and offer. In order to get my work done and carry on with the business of running a small media company, I have to ignore the bulk of things sent to me. That information overload takes a toll on my productivity and buries the small percentage of useful press releases and publicist communications I rely on to do my job.

There has to be a better way. Not only are millions of dollars being wasted trying to get journalists’ attention, it’s silly that the communication and PR industry in 2017 still relies on a shotgun approach to dealing with the mass media. I don’t have the answer — this isn’t that kind of column — but I would think that some combination of algorithm-learning, social networking, and opt-in communications has to work better than the blast-everything-at-me-all-the-time approach.

Entrepreneurs: This is your opportunity to disrupt a massive industry with tentacles that reach every major media outlet. According to the Holmes Report, the PR industry generated $15 billion in 2017, up 7 percent over 2016. Much of that money is wasted on campaigns that will have absolutely no traction with the media, leaving potentially thousands of customers frustrated by spending money with publicists to no avail.

I don’t see why a group of smart individuals can’t come up with a pitching and press release system that allows journalists, social media influencers and bloggers to find press releases and news that matter to our readers, organized by relevance and ranked by suitability. Kind of like a Facebook or Slack for press announcements. Somewhere we can opt in for information, get served up useful stories via algorithm and block the ones who constantly bug me with pitches that are inconsistent with what Amplify readers want.

Regardless, something has to be done. Yes, there are great publicists out there who read my work, subscribe to Amplify (financially supporting the media organizations they rely on) and regularly help me connect with clients and sources that lead to great articles. But for everyone one good publicist, there are ten that take money from young bands and startup companies for what amounts to spearfishing exercises where they blast out a press release and hope something sticks. If someone smarter and richer than me puts some dollars and brain power into finding a solution, he or she could come up with something superior to the current system.

And a small piece of advice to the young bands out there — if you’re a developing, growing act, don’t waste your money on hiring a publicist. Instead, focus on improving your craft, building an audience and putting on the best live show possible. If you’re good and catching fire, the media will find you. You don’t need to pay a middleman. If you have to hire someone to get our attention, you’re probably no quite ready yet. Keep practicing.

    Rant over. Brooks out.
